Summer 2023

I have been working on horse hair pottery since the weather has warmed up. I am drawn to the contrast of the black and white. It is a very spiritual process to honor the horse.

They are made and ready for you!  If  you love walks along the beach and the beauty of natures designs, then these are for you.  Each shell is hand thrown, cut and sculpted into this form, inspired from a natural shell.  The raku process creates all of the rich colors of copper when each shell is fired.

A Wise Old Owl

A wise old owl lived in an oak:
The more he saw, the less he spoke:
The less he spoke, the more he heard:
Why can't we all be like that bird?

Author Unknown

I am always inspired by nature.  For spring, maybe wisdom of the wise old owl should be added.

My raku pottery can be seen at the following Arts Festivals and also in The Red Dog Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC and also in the Pottery of the Sandhills in Aberdeen, NC and in Southwinds Gallery in Kernersville, NC.

Raku Lantern
Sometimes the fire is the magic and in this case it is true.  You can see how the fire flamed up this piece, bringing out all of the colors of copper.  I love it when the blues and coppers merge.  Nature is my inspiration in its color, texture and form.  Raku combines the earth, wind and fire, connecting my work back to nature.  This lantern stands 18" with cut work.

Spring 2018

Spring 2018

Spring Schedule 2018

Sometimes, the fire is magic when firing in the raku process and in this case the fire brought out the beautiful blues and copper.  I am working this winter on new ideas for clay.   I love to work in clay because if you dream it, you can figurer out a way to build the clay piece.  You can add texture and carvings, which gives the piece depth and design.  Then the magic of the fire will hopefully bring the piece to life.   Each piece is fired individually, thus making a unique statement in clay.

2016 Ceremonial Gowns

                                                                 Ceremonial Gowns
                                                                         Japan

Art museums often have on display ceremonial gowns from past celebrations thru the centuries.  Often these gowns were of the finest materials with special attention to detail and design.  I had this idea that maybe I could construct similar gowns out of clay.  I had learned to sew many years ago and make many of my clothes.  Using these skill, I set out to construct gowns from clay that were worthy of the most important celebrations.  After construction, I embellished them with carving, giving them depth and the feeling of fine brocades.  Each piece was raku fired and the colors of copper sweep up each gown.

                                                              Ceremonial Gown
                                                                 United States
                                                                  Ceremonial Gown
                                                                           France

These gowns will be part of an exhibit at the Milton Roades Center for the Arts in Winston- Salem, NC.  This Artist Spotlight is presented by Associated Artists of Winston-Salem. The dates for this exhibit are January 8 thru February 2.

My spring schedule will follow in the next month.  There are many new ideas in the works.  Stay tuned.  Let me know what you think of this new idea!

Summer Schedule 2015

                                                                    Fortune Cookie

Summer is the time to spend in the studio developing new ideas.  I love to have time in my schedule to work on all of the ideas I have been saving.  I am always making sketches of new form, textures and composition.
Sometimes it is nice just to have the time to figure out construction of new forms.  That is what I love about hand building in clay.  If you can dream a shape, hopefully you can figure out  how to build it out of soft clay.  Clay can have clean edges or be soft and flowing.  Who knows were the clay will lead me!  Stay tuned!

                                                               charlottemunningraku.com

It is time to start thinking about the spring Arts and Crafts Shows.  I have been working on new ideas to introduce in the spring.  It has been really cold so I have not been able to raku fire out side.  I have focused on making new pieces and will be ready to fire when a good weather day comes along.  I will post pictures of some of my new ideas when I get them fired.
The  Sunshine Artist Magazine cover and article was really good and I am very proud to be on the Oct. 2014 cover.  If you would like to see the article, you can email me for a copy.  jettclay@aol.com
The Clay workshop that Kathy Whitley and I did in January was a success.  All of the participates really seemed to enjoy the demonstration and hands on clay.  They all did a great job on their projects.  We will have a follow up workshop next Jan.

Exciting news, I have been commissioned to make 5 pieces for inclusion into the art for the new Cone Cancer Center here in Greensboro, NC. I have worked to make 5 pieces that are related in spirit and composition. They will be placed on floating shelves in the Cancer Center. I hope that these will inspire and reflect the beauty of nature. I will post a picture of the 5 pieces.

Sunday, July 24, 2011

This piece as well as one other is now in a art exhibit at Associated Artist Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC.

The show runs until Aug 27, 2011.
This is one of my newest design ideas. While in Utah, I found this beautiful crystal piece. The color of the crystals are an amber color and I thought would look perfect with my raku. I built this piece with a window to show case the crystal. I also added a light in the lid to shine down on the crystal to really let it sparkle.

During the months of February thru Aprril, I am having an exhibit of oil painting. This series is called "Have a Seat". I have painted a series of chairs from photographs of my travels. It was a great change of pace thru the cold winter months. They are warm and inviting and beg you to come in and have a seat. They will be in Southwinds Gallery, Kernersville, NC thru April. If you would like to see any painting in a larger format I will be glad to send it to you. They are for sale from $425 - $550.

I have added a new form of raku to my spring collection called naked raku. This technique is unique because after the pot is made, while it is semi-dry (leather hard) I pollished it using old nylon hose and plastic grocery bags, spoons or smooth rocks. Sounds strange but what is accomplished is the clay particles are compressed from the rubbing and as the particles move closer together, the clay begins to take on a shine. The technique is called burnishing and takes patience and time to develop the shine.
After the burnishing is complete, the pot is dried, bisqued and then rakued in a traditional raku kiln. No glaze is added so the pot absorbs the smoke and the result is a pot with the soft black shine of naked raku.

After the endless winter, I am able to raku fire once more. The colors of copper are back in my vocabulary!
