                                   White Bamboo with Apopholite  Crystals

This spring, my inspiration will be the beauty of nature.  I went to a gem and mineral show and got some beautiful new crystals which will inspire new forms.  I love the combination of the raku with crystals.  It is the combination of the earth, wind and fire.

January 11 - 12..........Clay workshop.  I will be teaching a clay workshop with Kathy Whitley at the Art Center in Virginia Beach, Va.  My part of the workshop will be to have students build a square box.  I really look forward to showing others my techniques and inspirations.

Summer Schedule 2019

                                       

                                       Horse Hair Raku

The American Indians developed this unique technique, using horse hair, to honor their fallen horses in battle.  I make each piece from white clay and when it is leather hard, I burnish this piece.  After bisque firing, I place the piece in the raku kiln and take the temperature to 1400 degrees.  At this temperature, I take this piece out of the kiln and place horse hair on the pot.  Each piece of horse hair create a burn design.  The overall effect is a soft burn design on the white clay.  I smoke the top black for contrast.  I love the final look and its spiritual nature.

This piece won an award at Boston Mills Artfest.. I was so proud!

                         Burnished Black with Apophyllite

I found these beautiful apophyllite crystals at a gem and mineral show and they have inspired a new limited series of Black and White.  I love the combination of the soft, smoked blackness of the naked raku and the beauty of the natural crystal.  It is all from the earth!

      Friends with hats.  These girls are all about their hats.  Women in the 1900's always had beautiful hats to go with their dresses and gowns.  I love hats and this was my inspiration to create these girls.  Their hats are special with feathers and roses and glamour!
       This summer I have worked hard to complete my orders, including one for the Chamber of Commerce in Winston-Salem, NC.  I won an award of excellence in Blowing Rock, Art in the Park this summer.  Now I am focusing on fall.  My first show in October was cancelled in Williamsburg, Va. as were most shows on the east coast due to weather.  Now the sun will come out and a beautiful fall is in store for us all.  I hope that you will come visit me at an art show near you.

                                                                    Fortune Cookie

Summer is the time to spend in the studio developing new ideas.  I love to have time in my schedule to work on all of the ideas I have been saving.  I am always making sketches of new form, textures and composition.
Sometimes it is nice just to have the time to figure out construction of new forms.  That is what I love about hand building in clay.  If you can dream a shape, hopefully you can figure out  how to build it out of soft clay.  Clay can have clean edges or be soft and flowing.  Who knows were the clay will lead me!  Stay tuned!

2014 has started out very cold so what could warm your thoughts more than a trip to shore.  Think of the warm sunshine on your shoulders and the waves breaking on the sand.  All of the sudden your eye catches the copper conch shell that has washed up.  These were my thoughts when I created this hand thrown raku conch shell.  Think warm thoughts!  Come see this and other new raku pieces at any of the following festivals.

New Raku

This is one of my newest pieces, a combination of the burnished black and the rich copper. Intricate designs have been carved into the area that I will glaze. The over all contrast between the smooth blackness and the vibrant copper gives my raku an updated look. This piece can be seen in an exhibition at the Mendenhall Administration Building on the Davidson County Community College, Lexington, NC. This piece as well as three others will be on exhibit until Dec 10th, 2012.

Spring is the time to start thinking of letting the sunshine in and what could be a better place to reflect that sunshine than a piece of my raku.

Updating a space can be as easy as changing or adding art work.
